The Newcastle team v Liverpool chosen on character and desire not ‘ability’

Looking ahead to the Newcastle team v Liverpool and quotes from Steve McClaren caught my  eye…

“It’s not about ability, not about tactics or systems.”

This was from Steve McClaren after the farcical display by Newcastle United last weekend at Selhurst Park.

It’s an interesting quote because picking on ability seems to be the very thing McClaren is doing at the moment.

If it’s not about ability, or perceived ability, we are left wondering what on earth Sissoko and Coloccini are doing in the starting XI, because it is not based on character or a desire to run through a wall for the team.

But if we go with Steve for a second and take these words at face value, we can assume that against Liverpool we will not vary tactically, and we will pick not on ability, but on character.

So disregarding all ability, what is your Newcastle team v Liverpool based on nothing but a desire to succeed and pull on the black and white shirt at 4pm on Sunday?

GK: Elliott (there’s nobody else)

Def: Janmaat, Mbemba, Dummet (Centre-half), Mbabu

Midfield: Colback, Anita, Wjanldum, Perez

Attack: De Jong, Mitrovic
