At today’s press conference before the Liverpool match, Steve McClaren repeated numerous times that everybody at the club thought they had turned the corner after the Bournemouth match.
If he really thinks that, then there are really serious problems at Newcastle United.
Yes Newcastle got three points that day but it was a horrendous performance with United outclassed by one of the other relegation contenders.
Only a combination of pure luck, Bournemouth having nobody who could score goals and a very decent display by Rob Elliot prevented a result like Crystal Palace last Saturday.
Steve McClaren also claims that the only thing the players lack is confidence….
I think we can add a big reality check as well, if the players also think that Bournemouth was anything other than a rubbish performance BUT a great three points.
“We have lost the last two games and not performed very well and it is a remarkable turnaround from three weeks ago, we left Bournemouth with smiles on our faces, thinking we had turned the corner and that is typical of football.
“Confidence can be eroded and can go as quickly as it comes. Watford, Sheffield Wednesday…phew…was poor, Chelsea – what a response.
“We did it after the international break…Norwich – won 6-2 and you saw the confidence, played good football and got results from the next four games. Two weeks after that we are back to poor performances and poor results but we believe in these players.
“Confidence is the only thing these players lack.”
