Saturday afternoon’s results have gifted Newcastle United the perfect opportunity to cut both Aston Villa and Sunderland adrift at the bottom of the table.

The two clubs who are almost certainly first choice for most Newcastle fans to get the drop….given the ideal Christmas present.

Of course the double-edged sword nature of today’s results means that if Villa win at St James Park, they then drop us straight back into the….relegation fight.

The fact that Christmas is looming has provoked all the relegation fighters to find that bit extra today, with the results showing….

Chelsea 3 Sunderland 1

Man Utd 1 Norwich 2

West Brom 1 Bournemouth 2

Swansea play on Sunday and have a golden chance to also drag themselves up, as they entertain a West Ham side who haven’t won for two months.

If both Swansea and Newcastle win their matches, at the bottom the Premier League would look like this (number of points before each team) on Christmas Day:

19 Bournemouth

19 Newcastle

18 Chelsea

17 Norwich

17 Swansea

12 Sunderland

6 Aston Villa

The more observant amongst you will also note that if Swansea win BUT Newcastle lose, we would be back in the bottom three for Christmas…
