The Premier League recent form table actually saw a slight improvement for Newcastle United after last weekend’s 5-1 Palace hammering!
The recent form covers the last half dozen matches and the 5-1 debacle at Palace was added on one end, whilst the 6-1 drubbing at the Etihad dropped off the other…
Newcastle’s last six games gives some indication of the turbulent recent weeks, with multi-goal defeats against Sunderland, Leicester and Palace, mixed up with the bizarre Norwich hammering and the very fortunate Bournemouth three points.
Whilst adding to the strangeness, the goalless draw against Stoke was probably the most convincing display of the season. Work that one out.
The overall direction though of results and performances is undeniably heading south though, something in marked contrast to Sunday’s visitors.
The last six games also happen to be Jurgen Klopp’s opening half dozen Premier League efforts as well.
In the six games before he arrived, Liverpool only won one game and collected six points in total, with six goals scored and 10 conceded.
As you can see below, under Klopp there has been only one defeat from his six matches, with 10 goals score, five conceded.
Who’d have a new manager…?
To confirm the upturn in fortunes under the new man, Liverpool have just stuck an impressive six goals away at Southampton last night to progress into the League Cup semis.
If you take out that Palace blip, then the scousers are undeniably thriving under Klopp, to take apart Chelsea and Manchester City (and Southanpton in the cup) away from home is tasty form.
It is 11 months since a rather subdued Liverpool display and a smartly taken Ayoze Perez goal were the order of the day in a 1-0 win at St James Park.
Sunday though looks to have ‘fireworks’ written all over it and Steve McClaren will hopefully be armed with more than a few sparklers.
