Arriving on Tyneside with six points, Paul Merson says that Saturday is ‘Cup Final’ time for Aston Villa.

With 12 defeats from their 16 Premier League matches, Merson says that the visitors should start planning for life in the Championship if Newcastle make that record 13 in 17.

Newcastle ‘have their tails up’ according to Paul Merson and he predicts that the United supporters will be right behind them as they look to hammer another nail into Villa’s relegation coffin.

The Sky Sports pundit fails to remind us that he is a big Aston Villa old boy, having spent four years at Villa Park and playing over one hundred games for them, only at Arsenal did he play more/stay longer.

Paul Merson saw a glimmer of light for Villa last weekend after they did better in the second half against Arsenal but that was only after the Gunners had sewn the game up with two goals in the opening 38 minutes.

Predicting a 2-0 win to Newcastle, the TV pundit says that he is going with ‘goodnight’ to Aston Villa on Saturday, let’s hope for once he is correct.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“I thought Villa were decent in the second half against Arsenal, but the game was over so early and they had nothing to lose by going forward.

“But I would have to say, if Newcastle win this, Villa should start preparing for next season in the Championship. It’s a cup final for them. This is the big one for them.

“If they lose, it’s goodnight. And I’m going with goodnight. Newcastle have their tails up and St James’ Park will be getting right behind the players on Saturday night.”
