Claims today that Newcastle United are looking at a January move for Everton’s Steven Naismith.
The 29 year old Scottish international is reported to be a target for Steven McClaren in the upcoming transfer window to add some experience to his attacking options.
Naismith has been at Goodison Park for three and a half years now and has been used as substitute (50) almost as many times as he has started (52) Premier League games.
Despite his bit part contribution, Steven Naismith has still scored 18 PL goals, including a hat-trick against Chelsea this season.
However, the Everton player hasn’t had a sniff for over two months and has been an unused substitute since starting against Manchester United in October.
The Sun report that the blue scousers are prepared to sell him but would be looking for £10m, which appears an ambitious valuation considering his age/profile.
However, as well as Newcastle, three other relegation candidates are also said to be interested, with Sunderland, Villa and Norwich all looking to expand their goalscoring options as well.
Needless to say, Steven Naismith is beyond the usual age range allowed by Mike Ashley but we await to see just how far the owner is prepared to bend if he is willing to back Steve McClaren with players that he wants, irrespective of their age/future sell-on value, whether that is Naismith or whoever.
