Newcastle defender’s Spurs performance tops Premier League stats

Newcastle United’s Daryl Janmaat made a poor start to the season and then quickly picked up his form from last season, when along with Ayoze Perez he was one of Newcastle’s few success stories.

Whilst by and large his attacking play has held up to scrutiny despite some largely disappointing form from the team overall, the Dutch international’s defending had looked increasingly suspect.

The games against Leicester and then Palace seeing the previously reliable full-back look as much of a shambles as the rest of United’s defending.

However, Daryl Janmaat did noticably better, like the rest of the team, against Liverpool and now at White Hart Lane, he showed excellent form in his primary role – defending.

He might not have got forward a lot against Spurs but no Premier League defender made more tackles during this weekend’s matches.

The Opta stats show that both Daryl Janmaat and Watford’s Allan Nyom made five tackles each, a great north east double, with Nyom helping the Hornets to a clean sheet and three points at Sunderland.

Third in the list of defenders making tackles was Man Utd’s Paddy McNair whose personal display was ‘unfortunately’ overshadowed by the loss to Bournemouth.

Tackles by Premier League defenders this past weekend:

5 Daryl Janmaat (Newcastle United)

5 Allan Nyom (Watford)

4 Paddy McNair (Manchester United)
