Newcastle 1 Aston Villa 1  Saturday 19 December 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Jamie Swan:

“De Jong miss = 1 point only

“Starting again without Perez and Cisse = mistake

“Three on the bounce would have been great. Nearly blew it and lost, could have still won it.

“Crappie weather, scrappy game – Thauvin for Anita was brave. Barman another pint.

“Goodnight.”

George Stainsby:

“Obvious, really. It’s us in a nutshell.”

James Rutherford:

“I don’t know what was worse: the weather, Aston villa in the first half, or Newcastle’s finishing.

“We’ll be in a relegation fight all season if we don’t put an end to this inconsistency. It’s great beating the big boys, but you need to beat the teams around you more importantly.

“Villa were there for the taking- two points dropped

Nat Seaton:

“How predictable was that?

“I know the weather played its part but hey surely they have a plan for how to play in conditions like this – my pub team does!

“Really disappointing is an understatement… “

Paul Lyon:

“Back down to earth, not quite a bump but a soft landing.

“Always a worry that we’d play as well as the opposition in front of us, and that we did.

“We had our chances but didn’t take them, some of our performances particularly in the centre of midfield lacked presence.

“Opportunity missed .

“If it wasn’t for the weather we may have lost that game.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“Hugely frustrating result against the worst team in the league.

“The manager needs to start Ayoze Perez. Simple. He got his team selection wrong today.

“Wins against Spurs and Liverpool taken when both those sides were off the back of Europa League games.

“So we’re on 17 points at Xmas. Tough games coming up too. We’re not out the soup just yet.

“Not sure the wet conditions helped that game today at all.”

Ben Cooper:

“Decent game, should have won, could have lost.

“Presumably de Jong will have some explaining to do!

“It is difficult to pan the players given the league table and attitude now, compared to two weeks ago…but this game shows we can take nothing for granted.”

Jamie Smith:

“Final words: hugely disappointing.

“Rain destroyed the gamewhich helped Villa and de Jong missing a sitter cost us.

“However, we have no attacking plan and this wil continue to cost us against this type of inferior opponent.”
