Everton 0 Newcastle 1   Saturday 26 December 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Ben Cooper:

“Horrible to lose to a goal from a corner that should have been a goal kick but that bad decision was consistent for a referee who was terrible.

“Decent game though and if Mitrovic had scored when he should have, we would have won.

“The Serb needs to watch Lukaku’s performance today and both learn from it and use it as a benchmark for his Premier League future.

“A team performance like that against West Brom should be enough for a win and let’s hope the luck we lost today will be with us next time.”

Jamie Swan:

“Jesus wept. However crap we were it’s hard to take conceding in the 93rd minute and to a very average player who never scores.

“Steve McCaren’s plan of letting the opposition have the ball for the entire game and hoping to Lucifer that they couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo nearly came to fruition.

“Better 2nd half without doubt, but again our goalkeeper is having to put man of the match performances in, to even be in with a sniff.

“Ultimately we are bottom 3 after nearly half the season played.

“PS Get well soon Pavel x”

James Rutherford:

“How deflating was that? Deserved a point. Can’t fault the performance massively.

“Still lacking a bit of cutting edge in the final third. Had the chances to win that game; that Mitrovic header in the second half has to go down as a bad miss.

“Monday against West Brom is a must-win now, which won’t be easy against a stubborn team that plays 12535 centre backs.”

Nat Seaton:

“One of the best all round team efforts of the season and still not enough to get us out of the bottom three.

“For me it comes down to the quality of squad – only one sub used and that was with 3 mins to go. Everton were there for the taking with how open the game became.

“Hard to take to lose like that.

“I don’t want excuses though, just show me on Monday at West Brom that you are up for the fight to stay in the Premier League please…”

Paul Lyon:

“Cursing our luck? Blood & guts at the end there, we nearly got away with a point.

“Where was the midfield? Why weren’t we in their faces from the start?

“Regrettably, we are miles away from a mid-table team. The amount of times Everton were allowed to just simply ghost into our half with the ball was inexcusable.

“Point or not, in my opinion that wasn’t an acceptable home performance from Newcastle.

“Poor form from the guy in the Strawberry Corner pushing the row in front of me, causing all sorts of havoc!

“Howay man, look out for each other.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“A gut wrenching festive hammer blow of a football match. Back into the bottom three. It’s starting to feel like a bit of a lost cause this.

“The manner of the defeat piles on the misery but the fact is chances were not taken. Aleksandar Mitrovic has failed to justify his price tag.

“If the players or management can’t string some wins together soon, this could be an horrendous scenario for the club.

“It’s a fully blown relegation battle. We’re right in the dogfight.

“Supporting Newcastle Utd isn’t easy and nights like this are the toughest.

“Really tough to take tonight. Hard cheese indeed.”

Notts Toon:

“Exactly what we deserved.

“We seemed to forget we were the home team.”

Jamie Smith:

“Decent game but failure to take chances and another good show from Elliot kept it at 0-0.

“Absolute sucker punch has left us facing desperate relegation trouble with some horrific fixtures coming up.

George Stainsby:

“We should have scored, we should have left someone on the post at the last corner, but if we continue to improve, we might stay up.

“How do we improve?

“Stop taking extra touches that slow down attacks, stop hoofing it up the pitch when there’s no one there.

“We need a bit of confidence and someone who can score. I think we’re getting better, but is it going to be enough?

“Are we better than Swansea and Norwich? Hopefully…”
