Ivan Toney got off the mark for the season in first team football on Saturday afternoon.

The Newcastle loan striker headed home in the 53rd minute to put Barnsley 2-1 up in the area semi-final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

There was no sign of another Newcastle loan player, Haris Vuckic, in the Wigan ranks with the Lancashire club equalising with eight minutes to go.

Ivan Toney almost grabbed victory in the last minute of normal time when he put his chance just wide.

Extra time saw no further goals and so it went to penalties.

Ivan Toney took responsiblity and scored the second Barnsley penalty, with the Yorkshire side winning the shoot-out 4-2.

Barnsley will now meet either Fleetwood or Morecambe in the northern area final in January, with the big prize being a day out at Wembley in April against the winners of the Southern area final.

It remains to be seen if Ivan Toney will still be around to take part in any future games as his initial loan period runs out shortly.
