News this morning that Henri Saivet is set for a move to Newcastle as early as next week according to reports.

The Chronicle say that their information is that the 25 year old Bordeaux winger/midfielder could arrive on Tyneside as soon as the January transfer window opens.

Saivet can play on the wing or in the middle and has scored two goals in 17 Ligue One games this season, mainly operating in the middle of the pitch.

A former teammate of Yoan Gouffran until Newcastle signed him in January 2013, Henri Saivet has had his fair share of injury problems in the last 18 months, including problems with his ankle, hamstring, thigh muscle and knee. Last season he only managed seven starts in the league.

However, the Chronicle claim that Newcastle’s scouting team have been impressed with what they have seen this season and that Henri Saivet could prove to be United’s first new recruit of the transfer window.

Saivet managed no Ligue One goals last year as he was plagued with injuries but in the previous two years he scored eight and six respectively.

The prospect of another French* (played all his career in France and played for the French Under 21s before electing to play for Senegal, the country of his birth) winger arriving at Newcastle will have more than a few feelings of deja vu for many Newcastle fans.

With one or two no doubt wondering if it can be a straight swap with Gouffran heading back the other way….

However, both Southampton and Everton are said to be also interested in the player, with French media saying that he came to their attention when impressing against Liverpool in the Europa League this season.
