Gini Wijnaldum was Newcastle United’s match winner against Liverpool and after the match he summed up the two most important qualities to succeed.
The Dutch midfielder said that Newcastle showed the fight to win and also carried the luck.
What is for sure is that without the first of those factors you are knackered and funnily enough, the harder you work the luckier you get.
Newcastle showed the battling spirit that has been so glaringly absent and despite not having created any real chances, United went ahead thanks to a Skrtel deflection off Wijnaldum’s cross/shot in the 69th minute.
After the shocking state of Newcastle’s last two displays, it is important to give them credit when they do earn the praise for their endeavours.
The double-edged sword though is that now they have shown they can do it against an in-form Liverpool side, it has to be repeated week-in week-out.
For now though, we will just enjoy the moment.
“We had to react from the last game because the performance wasn’t good, we trained hard together and we also kept faith in each other. It is difficult to win (Premier League) games but if you give your all you have to be proud.
“We fought to win and we were lucky that we won. It was difficult for Liverpool to create chances as we learned from the last two weeks when the performance was not good.
“When you play at home you want to have the fans behind you and you must give them something in return.
“Sometimes you need luck to score and somebody touches the ball and it goes in (first goal deflected off Skrtel), you are so happy because you work hard and have trained hard to get the result.”
