Ayoze Perez has been one of the success stories of the last 18 months at Newcastle United, if not THE success story.

A bargain buy from the Spanish second division and supposedly ‘one for the future’, Ayoze Perez ended up featuring in 36 of United’s 38 Premier League matches in his first season.

This season Steve McClaren ignored Perez’ credentials until suspension and poor form from the likes of Florian Thauvin forced him into giving the 22 year old a chance.

Once given the opportunity, Ayoze Perez has carried on from last season and already added three more goals to the seven he scored last season, plus his all round play has been in refreshing contrast to some of his teammates.

Sunday morning has seen the Chronicle report that their information from inside the club is that Newcastle United are to offer the striker an improved new contract in order to try and keep him at St James Park, in light of interest from Manchester United, Spurs and others.

Perez is on the same money that he was on when arriving as an unknown from that Spanish second tier and has seen four other young players arrive this summer for big transfer fees and corresponding wages.

Hopefully it won’t be a case of too little too late because surely it should have been a priority to reward Ayoze Perez this summer gone, when along with Daryl Janmaat they had easily been Newcastle’s best players last season.

It is an impossible position when you have somebody like Florian Thauvin who isn’t good enough for the team, at least at this moment in time. sitting on the bench and probably earning four or five times as much as a proven key player such as Ayoze Perez.

That kind of disparity can only erode team morale and anybody who is clearly a first team player longer term should be quickly rewarded for proving themselves.

The right time was in the summer to show Perez how highly he is valued at Newcastle United but let’s hope the right offer is belatedly made now, rather than hoping to keep him on the cheap.

This is what Steve McClaren had to say about Ayoze Perez’ progress this week:

“One of the players that has come out is Ayoze Perez. We have found a good little position and he’s thriving in it. He has came out of his shell.

“You go into any club and they will want a player who fans will want their name on the back of their shirt, they are heroes to the young fans. If we can get that it’s great.

“You look at Wijnaldum too, he’s another great example to follow. Ayo is similar.

“What Ayo has done is, he’s been good on the ball but he’s been good off it. He has been terrific off the ball. He loses the ball in training but he gets it back.

“He doesn’t get it back in a normal way, he’s a bit of a pest. And he wraps his leg around you and takes the ball.”
