When it comes to goals and assists, which Newcastle players have been productive this season?
This obviously also begs the question of which players have failed to deliver…
Steve McClaren at the start of the season called for all Newcastle players to take responsibility for creating and scoring goals.
Obviously more expectation on some players/positions more than others but it has been a consistent weakness in recent years, with Newcastle relying on too small a group of players to contribute almost all the creativity and goals.
So have the United Head Coach’s words inspired the Newcastle squad to take more responsibility?
Here are the Newcastle United players who have provided the goals and assists this season in the Premier League over the course of the first 12 matches.
The figure to the left if the combined goals and assists figure, the figures on the right are the goals + assists. (The assists stats are taken from the official NUFC club website).
8 Gini Wijnaldum (6+2)
5 Ayoze Perez (3+2)
4 Moussa Sissoko (0+4)
3 Aleksandar Mitrovic (2+1)
2 Daryl Janmaat (1+1)
1 Gabriel Obertan (0+1)
1 Vurnon Anita (0+1)
1 Papiss Cisse (1+0)
Yet again the responsibility is falling on far too few players, with Wijnaldum and Perez at the top, whilst Sissoko had his hotspot of assists in the Norwich match.
After that it is pretty dismal, with only Mitrovic and the dependable Daryl Janmaat really contributing.
Once again the central defenders are failing on set-pieces, whilst the contribution from central midfield (Colback, Tiote, Anita) is almost non-existent.
Time for everybody to step it up, starting against Leicester on Saturday.
