Steve McClaren had a one word reaction to Saturday’s win over Bournemouth, asked about the way the game had gone, his first reaction was ‘Wow’.
Newcastle somehow kept a clean sheet and collected all three points despite hardly having a kick all game.
Bournemouth dominated possession (68%), chances (20 v 2) and corners (16 v 0) but as Steve McClaren said, one bit of quality midway through the first half saw Newcastle score a superb team goal – totally out of keeping with the rest of the performance.
The home side were camped in Newcastle’s half and United struggled to even get over the halfway line, however the United boss felt that the character and determination that was shown, maybe amounted to enough ‘quality’ on the day.
The luck hasn’t been with Newcastle in the last couple of games but the scales were certainly balanced on Saturday, summing up how football is surely the stand out sport for unpredictable results which defy logic.
As the United Head Coach puts it: ‘Is that why you love it or hate it?’.
Steve McClaren talking to the club’s official tv channel:
“We had to fight and scrap for it. We have played a lot better than that over the last few weeks and got nothing, no results, not scored.
“We had one bit of quality and got the goal, rest of the time it was a backs against the wall – great courage and bravery.
“We said at half-time, maybe it is not going to be our day in terms of possession, keeping the ball – we couldn’t do that.
“That’s football, can’t explain it at times. Is that why you love it or hate it?
“In some ways we had enough quality. Bournemouth will be disappointed with their finishing because they had good opportunities but we showed great character.
“Players who were doing that job at the end, they are not used to doing, working that hard – but that is what you have to do to win games.”
