Central midfield has been a big talking point amongst Newcastle fans this season.

With Steve McClaren wanting to play this 4-2-3-1 formation, the central midfield pairing is essential to its success…or failure.

As Newcastle currently sitting one point above the relegation zone and only two wins from 13 Premier League matches, the signs aren’t good.

So who would Newcastle fans like to see in those two key positions in the middle of the pitch?

We polled supporters and limited the choices to the three players that Steve McClaren seems to think fit the positions: Anita, Colback and Tiote, as well as the choice of buying in one or two new players.

Some fans questioned why other players such as Wijnaldum and de Jong weren’t options in the poll but we left them out as McClaren doesn’t appear to see them as players for these central midfield roles.

We asked: What is your ideal central midfield partnership?

Thanks to all that voted and these are the results:

47% Colback and a new signing

31% Two new signings

9% Tiote and Colback

7% Colback and Anita

3% Tiote and a new signing

3% Anita and a new signing

0% Tiote and Anita

Jack Colback gets the backing of a half-decent figure of 63% of Newcastle fans, with Tiote (12%) and Anita (10%) getting minimal support.

Then you have 84% of fans wanting at least one new signing playing in the middle of the pitch and almost a third (31%) wanting a whole new midfield partnership bought in.
