Thursday night saw a young Newcastle team run out 8-1 winners against Ashington.

An impressive crowd of 1,229 saw an entertaining game despite the wind and the rain doing its best to spoil Ashington’s big night.

The match was to mark the opening of a new stand and Ashington & Newcastle fan, local MP Ian Lavery, was on hand to do the honours.

With only a few minutes on the clock, Sean Longstaff opened the scoring, with Adam Laidler making it 2-0 before half-time.

Three more goals were then added after the break which included Longstaff grabbing a hat-trick, before Andrew Johnson managed a consolation goal for Ashington.

By the time Premier League referee and local lad Michael Oliver blew the final whistle, Newcastle had managed another three goals to run out 8-1 winners.

The final tally of goalscorers was Sean Longstaff (4), Adam Laidler (2), Owen Gallacher and Lewis McNall – 16 year old McNall currently doing great things with the Under 18s, having scored nine in nine games.

Newcastle United: Pearson (B Smith 46), Sterry (Pollock 56), Gibson, Barlaser (Suddick 56), Williams, Satka, Holmes (Gallacher 56), L Smith, Longstaff, McNall, Laidler
