Newcastle star makes Garth Crooks team of the week

No surprises for guessing which Newcastle player makes the Garth Crooks team of the week.

Picking his best eleven players from the weekend for BBC Sport, Crooks selected Rob Elliot after his man of the match display on the south coast.

The TV pundit says that Elliot was the only reason that Newcastle kept a clean sheet and described it as ‘refreshing’ that the keeper was keen to play despite carrying an injury.

As for the rest of the Newcastle team…

Garth Crooks says that it is little wonder that Ayoze Perez’ goal was only the second away one for United this season, considering how badly they played against Bournemouth.

Garth Crooks speaking to BBC Sport:

“Elliot came into the game against Bournemouth having declared himself fit from a thigh strain.

“How refreshing to see a modern day player prepared to perform for his team even when he might not be 100% fit.

“It was just as well Elliot did play because not only was he outstanding in goal for Newcastle, he was the only reason they kept a clean sheet.

“The Magpies had scored one away league goal this season before the trip to the Cherries (in the 6-1 defeat at Manchester City) and having seen this performance I’m not surprised.”

Garth Crooks team of the week:

Rob Elliot (Newcastle)

Scott Dann (Crystal Palace)

Ryan Shawcross (Stoke)

Virgil van Dijk (Southampton)

Mousa Dembele (Spurs)

Christian Eriksen (Spurs)

Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace)

Gerard Deulofeu (Everton)

Jesse Lingard (Man Utd)

Jamie Vardy (Leicester)

Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
