The winners of the North East football writers’ player of the year awards have been revealed.

With both Newcastle and Sunderland fighting relegation battles and Middlesbrough failing to get promoted from the Championship, not the bets of seasons for the North East ‘big three’.

As for individuals, the local football writers went for two Newcastle players as individuals who had shone in a poor year for their club.

Picking up the overall player of the year award is Daryl Janmaat, the Dutch international hitting the ground running when he arrived after a busy year in club football and the Brazil World Cup.

Janmaat proving to be Newcastle’s best defender, as well as often the most creative presence in the team with a series of assists.

As for the young player of the year award, this must have been a simple decision for the football writers.

Ayoze Perez arriving from the Spanish second tier and billed as ‘one for the future’ but whose goals arguably kept Newcastle up.

Perez appeared in all but two of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League matches last season and prove dan instant hit with the fans.

The Spanish striker proved once again at Bournemouth yesterday that he has star quality and is a deserving winner of this award.

Both Janmaat and Perez will be presented with their awards at the Ramside Hall Hotel, Durham, on November 29.
