For somebody who has made billions, employs tens of thousands of people and features on the FTSE 100, Mike Ashley is one of a kind.
His ever growing empire of course has football clubs at the heart of it, especially when it comes to generating (free) publicity for Sports Direct.
Very rarely though does Mike Ashley run his businesses in harmony with others, whether that is customers, staff (the 90% on zero hours contracts) and those he has a business relationship with.
Yesterday it was revealed that Ashley has got his legal team to take action against Dave King, the Chairman of Rangers, claiming he has breached a ‘gagging order’ which stops Rangers owners/employee revealing just how bad the contracts are that previous regimes have tied the football club into, with Mike Ashley and SD.
Wednesday morning has brought a tacky sideshow to Ashley trying to bring about a prison spell for Dave King and a big fine for Rangers.
Via Sports Direct, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has on sale this classy beanie hat, currently ‘discounted’ from £10 to £3….
When contacted by the Daily Record, Sports Direct refused to say what the slogan on the hat referred to, whether the Rangers Chairman or something more ‘innocent’.
Either way, you just wonder what kind of successful businessman trades in this kind of product, especially when he is in the serious business of trying to imprison a business rival that he has a problem with.
