Jonas Gutierrez says he is ready for the big derby on Saturday having experienced them in Argentina, as well as ‘one of the hottest in Europe’ when at Newcastle United.
Saturday night is the Galician derby, with Deportivo home to big rivals Celta Vigo.
Deportivo have been left in ninth place in the table after picking up a drawing habit, six of their 11 La Liga matches have ended all square, with only one win at home so far.
However, for Jonas Gutierrez things are improving all the time.
The former Newcastle player said that when he arrived in September, it would take him time to reach full fitness as he was behind the rest of the players with not having a proper close season of training.
However, he was given his first chance off the bench away at Granada in early October and has now started the last two La Liga matches, at home to Atletico Madrid and Levante away last time out – both 1-1 draws.
Looking forward to facing Celta Vigo on Saturday, Jonas Gutierrez says that his experience of derbies tells him that it doesn’t matter how you play in derbies just so long as you win!
Something that Newcastle fans are all too aware of in recent times.
Jonas Gutierrez speaking to Marca:
“I know all about a derby, I am from Argentina and have also played in Newcastle/Sunderland, maybe one of the hottest in Europe.
“In derbies it matters little how you play, the only important thing is to win – the games are special and the fans want to win.”
