Newcastle United entered the Northumberland Senior Cup at the quarter-finals stage….and exited it.
The United second string were comfortably outplayed by a Blyth Spartans team who were keen to beat NUFC for the first time in over 20 years in this competition.
A crowd of over eight hundred saw Blyth take the lead in the 13th minute, when midfielder Michael Richardson, once upon a time on Newcastle’s books, firing the home side into the lead.
The current cup holders weren’t troubled by the ‘damp’ conditions as they dominated the proceedings.
Ivan Toney had an effort disallowed for offside just before half-time but other than that he struggled to influence the game despite his recent excellent form for the Under 21s/Reserves.
Maybe he was still in shock at news of a rare away win for the first team, that Bournemouth win coming only half an hour or so before this Northumberland Senior Cup game kicked off.
The second half was more of the same as Blyth Spartans dictated the play and veteran Robbie Dale wrapped up the result with just over 10 minutes left.
So no silverware coming Newcastle’s way from this direction, it looks like we may just have to settle for the FA Cup…
