Shola Ameobi, at the ripe old age of 34, has done something for the first time.
A bit like a boxer with a perfect win record coming to the end of his career and falling for a sucker punch….
Yes, Shola Ameobi has missed a penalty.
For the first time in professional football the former United striker has seen his effort saved on Saturday afternoon.
The venue was the Macron Stadium, the opposition Bristol City and the goalkeeper to accomplish this legendary feat – Frank Fielding.
In the 51st minute, the scores goalless, Shola Ameobi sees his spot-kick saved after he hit it with his right foot towards the bottom left corner.
Other than that, Shola Ameobi actually had a decent game and with 20 minutes left created a great chance for Liam Feeney who had his effort well saved by Fielding as well.
Then with 10 minutes to go, Shola thought he’d made up for his 12 yard failure, only to see the linesman raise his flag for offside after he finished from close range.
The final score Bolton 0 Bristol City 0 and a bit of history made.
***No news yet as to whether a monument will be erected to mark this remarkable event but we will keep you posted…
