Newcastle are going to make a £20m bid for striker Saido Berahino in January according to an ‘exclusive’ this morning.

The West Brom striker was the subject of a bid by Spurs in the summer but the Baggies accused both player and Tottenham of trying to force a move on the ‘cheap’.

The forward ending up staying at The Hawthorns and the two clubs continuing with serious friction between them.

After the failed move, Saido Berahino vowed to never play for West Brom again and missed early matches but then the player did a u-turn and is once again top scorer, even if it is only three goals in Tony Pulis’ less than attacking set-up.

Newcastle have been repeatedly linked with Berahino in the past and now The Star claim with their exclusive, that United are going to offer the £20m for the striker in January and take advantage of the fact that West Brom will supposedly refuse to let the player go to White Hart Lane.

The forward has scored 22 Premier League goals in 51 starts, plus sub appearances, and is certainly a talented player.

However, whilst Newcastle are definitely in need of more goals and extra pace to complement the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic, it is hard to see Mike Ashley pushing the boat out in January, unless United are in serious trouble.

On the other hand, there have been repeated claims by press friendly with the club, that there will be more spending on a similar scale to what we saw in the last window.

So maybe if Ashley sees there is a deal to be done on a young player who could increase in value…

What does appear certain is that Saido Berahino has no intention of staying at The Hawthorns long-term and so it only a case of when, not if, West Brom cash in on their biggest asset.
