The head of recruitment at Wolves, Kevin Thelwell, says that all the reports they have had on Mike Williamson ‘have been really good’.

The Newcastle centre-back has agreed a one month initial loan deal at Molineux and is expected to go straight into the team at Birmingham on Saturday.

The Head Coach Kenny Jackett says that experienced defenders are at a premium and he is really pleased to have him, as Wolves are short of defensive options and conceding plenty of goals – nine in the last three games.

Head coach Kenny Jackett:

“With the injury problems we have at the back, we are delighted to have brought in an experienced player like Mike.

“Although he hasn’t had much game time this season, he has been training all the time and is itching to get back into first-team football and the opportunity at Wolves is a good one.

“It works both ways and we are very pleased to have him at a time when defensively we have been leaking goals and have been short of defenders. Recognised experienced defenders have been at a premium.

“We are delighted to add Mike to the group and believe he complements the players that we have here.”

Wolves’ head of football development & recruitment Kevin Thelwell:

“All the reports we have had on Mike Williamson have been really good, both on and off the pitch.

“He was keen to come, wants to do well and is excited about the opportunity of playing in a derby (v Birmingham) on Saturday.  He is going to bring a lot of experience and a lot of quality to our back four.

“You are always looking at players and talking to people about availability for situations like this. It can be really difficult to get clubs to let players out.

“Clubs in the Premier League are often nervous about letting players out on loan, in case they get an injury.

“While we can all see players who aren’t involved with their clubs, it’s not necessarily the case that they are available.

“To be able to bring Mike in with all of his experience and playing record is something we are really pleased with.”
