It has now been revealed that Tottenham made a bid to sign Ayoze Perez in the summer but were knocked back by Newcastle United.

The player himself has made public that he could have made a move only one year after joining Newcastle as an unknown from Spanish second tier club Tenerife.

Last Saturday’s Newcastle v Chelsea game got plenty headlines over in Spain with Pedro playing for the blues and Ayoze Perez playing and scoring for Newcastle.

Following the 2-2 draw, Ayoze Perez was interviewed by Spanish newspaper Marca and reflected on the game, as well as coming close to moving in the summer.

Ayoze Perez speaking to Marca:

“I’m happy with the goal (v Chelsea) but it is like a thorn – losing two points.”

“I always liked the Premier League but never dreamed of getting to where I am now.”

Tottenham:

“There was interest (in the summer) from Tottenham, especially from (Spurs manager) Pochettino. It is a compliment to me.

“In the end it didn’t work out because Newcastle considered me too important and would not let me leave.”
