With eight Premier League matches completed, we have compiled the player ratings marks so far for every match.
After every Newcastle game we ask supporters to give marks out of 10 for every player, then from the thousands who vote we get definitive ratings using our interactive feature.
Taking these first eight Premier League matches, we have added all the marks together and came out with an average for each player who has started at least one league game.
We haven’t included ratings for substitutes, as if they come on late in the match they will generally get a low mark as they will have had little chance to influence the game.
As you can see, Steven Taylor is clear at the top but he owes that from just one start against Manchester United when the whole team were given a collective pat on the back in the ratings.
A similar story with Kevin Mbabu who is joint second, he has done very well but his rating is based on just these last two matches against Chelsea and Manchester City.
When it comes to players who have started a decent number of games, you have three players rated clear of the rest.
Ayoze Perez, Cancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic are rated as the top three performers and I wouldn’t have any arguments with that.
Next up we have a group of five players who have had (relatively!) steady/decent starts to the season, with Krul, Wijnaldum, Colback, Anita and Janmaat.
Janmaat has clearly been one of Newcastle’s best players iver the last few matches but had a slow start to the season and was well marked down (1.6) for his sending off at Swansea.
After that it all starts getting a bit desperate as you have Coloccini (5.2), Obertan (5.2) and Haidara (4.8) – none of them looking convincing.
Then at the bottom you get to Sissoko (4.6), Thauvin (4.4), Cisse (3.3) and finally Gouffran with his single but atrocious performance against Man City.
Interesting to see that of the five top players who have played more than a couple of games, three of them are summer signings.
Mbemba, Mitrovic and Wijnaldum, featuring along with Krul and Perez.
So anybody who thinks that Newcastle’s poor start is simply down to the new signings performing is definitely getting hold of the wrong end of the stick.
As most of us realise, the heart of the problem lies with the players who were already at the club and the question is, can the likes of Coloccini, Sissoko, Colback, Anita and Haidara raise their games?
