With 10 Premier League matches completed, we have a decent set of results in order to compare the performances of the Newcastle United players, using The Mag’s player ratings.

Each match, after the final whistle we ask supporters to give their marks out of 10 for each player, with thousands voting it gives a very credible snapshot of how each member of the team has done in a particular match.

We have gone back through these 10 PL matches and taken the average marks given by the fans, to give a season average so far for each United player.

Looking at those with top marks, if you leave out the likes of Taylor and Mbabu who have only started one and two games respectively, you can see a consensus on who the better players have been.

Only Perez, Mitrovic, Mbemba and Wijnaldum score an average of more than 6.0 for the season. I don’t think there is any doubt that these have been Newcastle’s best players so far and it is very telling that three of them are signings from the summer.

We might be second bottom of the table with only one win but it does show how far the squad/team had sunk in recent years, the near relegation last season wasn’t a freak event.

A bit worrying is that the next two highest average marks are for two players who are out injured.

Tim Krul scoring 6.0 and definitely not back until next season, whilst reports this morning say Jack Colback (5.7) isn’t expected back until after the new year, following the knee injury he picked up on Sunday.

After that there aren’t many positives to say the least. Maybe the only one is that Daryl Janmaat has been scoring much better in recent weeks, which reflects what is generally agreed to be decent form, after he started the season so slowly – including the daft sending off at Swansea.
