Steve McClaren has declared that Newcastle United’s season kicks off in two weeks time.

Yet again the United Head Coach blamed tough opening fixtures for Newcastle being bottom of the table and already five points adrift of safety.

McClaren claiming that Aguero’s five goals in 20 minutes could happen to anybody.

However, when asked if his players’ heads went down, the Newcastle boss didn’t disagree and said that when you concede a goal(s) you have to ‘batten down the hatches’ and ensure you stay in the game.

Newcastle of course choosing to simply collapse and far too many players go missing.

United play Norwich City in 14 days time and then Sunderland 7 days later, if his team don’t take an absolute minimum of four points from the two matches, what will Steve McClaren be able to say then?

Steve McClaren:

“We just made mistakes and we got punished by a world class player, Aguero, who on any day can do that to any team and he did it to us.

“Five goals in 13 minutes, it is difficult to take, we came here to win, I think we were very attack minded and we got the first goal, second goal should have been allowed, Mitrovic had other chances. You could not fault that first half performance.

“What happened in that second half could happen to anybody.”

‘Does it concern you that heads seemed to go down?’

“Of course, you can’t do that. Whatever you do, you batten down the hatches and you make sure you are in it.

“We will look back and reflect, we have probably shown, as we did last week, our strengths and weaknesses.”

Our season begins:

“Our season begins in two weeks, we have had a tough start but I have seen enough in the last two weeks that this team can play, can compete and can win games.

“You can feel sorry for yourselves but you can’t afford to do that.”
