Shola Ameobi scores on Bolton debut – Video

Only hours after agreeing a pay as you play deal with Bolton Wanderers, Shola Ameobi found himself thrown into the action against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.

Shola’s last competitive football had been seven months ago on 21 March 2015, an 86th minute substitute as Crystal Palace beat Stoke 2-1.

This season, the former Newcastle striker had spent time on trial at five different Championship clubs (including Bolton) without getting a deal.

Only for out of the blue, bottom of the Championship club Bolton to offer the surprise deal on Friday, reportedly until the New Year.

Bolton had failed to score in eight of their 13 matches (all competition) this season but Shola Ameobi had to be content with a place on the bench, that only lasted 12 minutes though as Gatehead born Gary Madine picked up a bad injury and Shola was back into competitive football as his replacement.

Only 19 minutes after stepping onto the pitch, Shola and Bolton were celebrating as the former Newcastle striker smashed the ball into the net after the ball fell to him from a corner.

An excellent finish and you can watch it below (on 0.20), plus watch out for the superb through ball he plays for one of his team-mates in the piece of action that immediately follows the goal on the highlights.

Surely this must be a good omen with the mackem slayer scoring only hours before today’s derby…

Sadly Bolton threw two points away with a daft penalty in the second-half, to ruin what would have been a perfect debut for Shola Ameobi.
