Patrick Kluivert was a signing that didn’t really work out at St James Park.
Despite scoring 13 goals in 37 appearances, Newcastle didn’t exercise the option of a second season for the Dutch striker.
Undoubtedly a class act and previously a winner of the Champions League and league titles in Spain and Holland, Kluivert often looked disinterested in his time on Tyneside, though this was interspersed with some real quality strikes.
The story goes that the forward decided to join Newcastle after the reception he got from United fans when Barcelona visited St James Park for a friendly.
In the years since, whenever Newcastle United’s name has cropped up, the Dutchman has always talked positively about the club.
With five Dutch internationals now at the club, Patrick Kluivert has shown fresh interest in the club, especially since the signing of Gini Wijnaldum.
After the 6-2 win over Norwich, Patrick Kluivert posted the following on his Twitter account:
“Congratulations to my friend GWijnaldum for his 4 goals he scored for my ex club NUFC one of the few Dutch players in shape these days.”
On the eve of today’s derby match against Sunderland, Kluivert has sent out another message of encouragement for Georginio Wijnaldum and his new club:
“2 great Derby’s today on both end of the table ManUtd vs MCFC one of them to be first by a win SunderlandAFC vs NUFC come on toonarmy”
