Ahead of last Saturday’s visit to Manchester City, Newcastle United Under 18s coach Dave Watson claimed the NUFC kids were improving with every match.

This despite losing six and drawing one of their eight games and being bottom of the table.

The previous four matches reading:

Middlesbrough 4 Newcastle 1

Newcastle 0 Sunderland 3

Liverpool 4 Newcastle 1

Newcastle 0 Blackburn 2

Things didn’t get any better as the Under 18s matched the first team the previous weekend, by serving up another seven goal ‘thriller’.

Whilst the first team left it until just before half-time to collapse, Newcastle’s young stars conceded twice in the first four minutes to a 15 year old debutant.

This latest sorry result for Newcastle’s Under 18s sadly typifies the shocking state of the reserves and academy this calendar year, mirroring the first team in their losing mentality.

Final Score: Manchester City Under 18s 6 Newcastle United Under 18s 1

Newcastle United Under 18s: Pearson, Aziakonou, Trodd, Suddick (Donaghey 60), Pollock, Adu-Peprah, Long, Lowther (Johnson 60), Charman (McNall 72), Heaney, Smith
