Gini Wijnaldum has stayed in the top 10 of the Premier League power rankings, now sitting at number 10 after dropping five places.

The Power Rankings are a system developed by Sky Sports to reflect a player’s performance over the previous five weeks (of games) – each preceding week is worth fewer points.

This means that the Power Rankings reflect the most in-form players of the moment, with your most recent match the most important and then working backwards/down in terms of importance.

After each set of matches the power rankings are updated, with a list of the top 50 players that week published, plus the top 50 over the course of the last five weeks.

Wijnaldum didn’t get on the scoresheet for Newcastle and obviously ended up on the  losing side, though United fans did rate him Newcastle’s top player against Sunderland on The Mag player ratings.

The former PSV midfielder has been Newcastle’s most influential player in recent matches, before the four goal display against Norwich, it was Wijnadlum who got the assist for Mitrovic’s goal v Manchester City and the game before that he scored against Chelsea.

Last week Wijnaldum was the biggest riser in the power rankings and this week it is one of Sunderland players.

As you can see below Sunderland defender Billy Jones is now number 18, having risen 234 places, keeping a clean sheet and scoring at the other end against Newcastle have done wonders for his place in the power rankings.

Still live in hope that one or two Newcastle defenders get somewhere close to the upper reaches one day…
