Newcastle United are preparing a January bid for Anthony Koura according to reports this morning.

The 22 year old striker was watched by Newcastle, Sunderland and Watford last weekend according to French media reports, Koura scoring in a 1-1 home draw with Dijon.

That was his only his first goal of the season but he followed that up with a late winner last night (Friday) at Creteil, helping his team to a 2-1 away victory in France’s Ligue 2.

Newcastle were also said to be represented at last night’s match and Nimes are reportedly keen to do a deal in January for around £1m, as Anthony Koura is out of contract next summer.

Koura has played at all youth levels for France up to under 19s and has scored 12 goals from 38 starts in the French second tier.

The name may resonate with a few Newcastle fans as when he was still at Le Mans as a 19 year old, Anthony Koura actually spent time on trial at Newcastle in pre-season of summer 2012.

Despite reportedly impressing the Newcastle set-up at the time and scoring a couple of goals in a friendly against Hamilton Academicals, no deal was done and the striker moved on to Nimes.

No surprise to see Newcastle continually linked with young players in France and with the signing of Ivan Toney this summer, as well as the likes of Amalfitano and Ayoze Perez, they have shown that they aren’t shy of bringing in players from lower levels in the UK and abroad, in the hope they might get a bargain.
