Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is the top rated United player in the power rankings but it is a bit of a hollow honour.
The Power Rankings is a system developed by Sky Sports to reflect a player’s performance over the previous five weeks – each preceding week is worth fewer points.
This means that the Power Rankings reflect the most in-form players of the moment, with your most recent match the most important and then working backwards/down in terms of importance.
After each set of matches the power rankings are updated, with a list of the top 50 players that week published, plus the top 50 over the course of the last five weeks.
Newcastle don’t have a single player in either top 50, though getting beat 6-1 by Manchester City was never going to help…
Sergio Aguero accumulated the most points from the round of games in that last weekend of Premier League fixtures, which is hardly a surprise after scoring five goals.
Whilst again no surprise, Tim Krul received the worst points total of all goalkeepers that weekend after conceding the six goals.
Sky have also published details of the player who is currently the best performing player at their club in the current power ranking, which cover the most recent five weeks of Premier League matches.
As you can see, Georginio Wijnaldum is Newcastle’s best performer at the minute with 2,205 points.
However, it is significant that the team with the next lowest ‘best’ total for a player is Sunderland’s Yann M’Vila with 3,194 points.
The only other team to have their best player with under 4,000 points is Chelsea and Kurt Zouma (3,403).
