When Fabricio Coloccini didn’t play a single minute of the pre-season friendlies despite training throughout the summer, Newcastle fans wondered what was happening.

Many thought he could be leaving the club and United looking at an all new central defensive pairing to try and cure the shocking defending of recent seasons.

Safe to say nobody anticipated that not only would Coloccini stay and remain captain, but would also get an extended two year contract after being so average to poor since the 2011/12 season.

However, that pales into insignificance with news today that another player was given an extended contract last year, even though this wasn’t revealed to the fans.

Ahead of today’s Norwich match, Miles Starforth of the Shields Gazette has revealed that the match programme says that amazingly, Rob Elliot was given a ‘new long-term contract last year’.

Starforth writing:

‘Programme reveals Rob Elliot signed ‘new long-term contract’ last year. This was never announced at the time – or any time since.’

This just beggars belief.

Rob Elliot has never looked good enough to play in the Premier League and on top of that, never looks fit and is often injured.

With Karl Darlow having signed and the likes of Freddie Woodman and other young promising keepers comes through, it just doesn’t make sense…

Unless selling Tim Krul was on the cards maybe?
