Steve McClaren has been doing his bit to talk up the players ahead of facing Stoke City today.

The United boss saying some of the football played recently by his team has been ‘fantastic’.

When it comes to individuals though, I think he has gone a little over the top in trying to prop up their fragile confidence.

Steve McClaren saying:

‘He’s a leader, he’s a talker, experienced…’ and ‘Every game he has been great for us…a tough character’.

Which two players can he mean?

With 11 guesses each on these two descriptions I still would never have got the players, have a few guesses of your own before reading on.

Steve McClaren:

“He has been ready, training well every day. When Tim got injured it was a big blow but I have been impressed with Rob Elliot on the training field.

“He’s a leader, he’s a talker, experienced – a big opportunity.

“I think Vurnon’s done very well this season, just at some stages we have needed a more attacking midfield player and he has been sacrificed. I think every game he has been great for us, disciplined. He knows the job and does the job, a tough character.

“The key thing for me is I enjoy watching us play especially in the first half (v Sunderland). I enjoyed the Norwich game, some of the football has been fantastic, that is progress.

Here’s hoping we see plenty of tough characters and leadership against Stoke City today.
