Disaster for Tim Krul and Newcastle United.

The United keeper has picked up what looks a serious knee injury and been forced off the pitch for Holland.

This of course comes only days after Daryl Janmaat was forced to drop out of the Holland squad with a knee problem.

Krul got a shock chance in the first team in today’s game v Kazakhstan only because of injury to first choice keeper Cillessen in the warm up.

All looked positive for Newcastle and the Dutch as Georginio Wijnaldum put Holland one up (watch it here) in the 33rd minute in this vital qualifier.

Wesley Sneijder added a second in the 50th minute and Holland held on for a win despite a last minute goal from Kuat for the home side.

The win means Holland go into the play-off spot a point ahead of Turkey, though they play tonight away at the Czech Republic.

However, of more concern and interest for Newcastle fans is that with nine minutes to go, Tim Krul appeared to land awkwardly and early reports suggest he may have twisted his knee.

The injury certainly doesn’t appear trivial as the United keeper clearly couldn’t continue and one-time supposed Newcastle target, Jeroen Zoet was forced to come on for the final stages.

Today’s match saw even the home players wearing gloves and so a hard pitch could have contributed to Tim Krul’s injury.

With Karl Darlow injured, Newcastle look to be relying on Rob Elliot, the third choice keeper who has looked less than convincing in his 14 Premier League starts in four and a half years.

As Newcastle go into this vital run of ‘winnable’ matches, this is the last thing we all needed.
