More than a few Newcastle fans will have raised eyebrows at Alan Shearer’s comments about Alan Pardew.

The Newcastle legend (Shearer not Pardew…) says that Pardew’s achievements are ‘under-rated’ and he is leading the way when it comes to English managers.

Crystal Palace have made a decent start to the season but as Newcastle fans we all so often saw promising runs of results and performances then turn to even longer runs with wins few and far between.

Alan Pardew hasn’t even been at Selhurst Park for a year and as Newcastle supporters we would judge him on his ‘achievements’ over more than four years at Newcastle, one excellent season (2011/12) but near relegation in 2012/13 and 2014/15 (half Pardew half Carver), as well as the dramatic second half of the season collapse in 2013/14, gives a truer reflection of his ‘achievements’.

Alan Pardew writing in his column for Coral:

“Alan Pardew is doing a superb job at Crystal Palace and I am sure he is enjoying it there.

“They have made a more than reasonable start and they have some good young players. “

“His achievements are probably under-rated by many still and with so few English managers in the top league he is leading the way.

“He looks refreshed, certainly more energised than he did at Newcastle, and he certainly seems to have a great relationship with the chairman there at Palace.”

Penny drops for Newcastle:

“I hope the penny has dropped for Newcastle because that draw against Chelsea should give them confidence.

“Nobody was complaining with that result last weekend even though they were 2-0 up because you could see effort and commitment from the players.

“If the same thing happens again against City and they don’t win, the fans would accept that.”
