Young Newcastle star named in England squad for Euro qualifiers
Young Newcastle star Mackenzie Heaney has been named in the England squad for the upcoming European Under-17s Championship qualifiers.
England will head off to Portugal next week as they continue their preparations ahead of the opening first round qualifier against San Marino in two weeks time.
They then face Armenia and Portugal in their other two group matches.
England v San Marino – Tuesday 29 September
England v Armenia – Thursday 1 October
Portugal v England – Sunday 4 October
The top two in the group will progress to the Elite Round qualifiers in March, when the final spots for next summer’s finals in Azerbaijan will be decided.
England finished runners-up at the recent FA International Tournament which served as a warm-up to the qualifiers.
England beat Italy 3-0 and Turkey 2-1, before losing 7-3 defeat to Portugal in a very open game that could and should have been a lot closer.
On a personal level though it was a landmark day for Mackenzie Heaney with him grabbing one of England’s three goals, his first at Under 17 level for his country.
The full England 18 man squad:
Goalkeepers: Jared Thompson (Chelsea), Nicholas Hayes (Ipswich Town)
