Steve McClaren was the one who called Steven Taylor up for England in days gone by, now he says that the Newcastle defender is an important player for the club, despite dropping him for last Saturday’s match against Arsenal.

The United Head Coach says that it is vital Taylor stays fit and is ready for when called upon.

McClaren says that everybody can see ‘what an asset’ Steven Taylor is, after his last performance against Manchester United when the team kept a clean sheet.

The United boss reckons that it isn’t just on the pitch but off it as well, where Steve Taylor is an asset. Steve McClaren saying that when he walked into the club he was indebted to the centre-back, as he gave him ‘some great information on everything’.

The mind boggles…

What doesn’t quite add up, is that if Steve McClaren and others within the club, think Steven Taylor is such a big asset, why hasn’t he been offered a new contract?

The player is only 29 and sees his current deal run out in summer 2016, yes despite this there’s been no mention of any offer on the table.

Steve McClaren:

“He (Steven Taylor) is an important player for us and we just want to keep him fit – if he can stay fit, you have all seen what an asset he is.

“What he needs to do is what he’s doing – stay fit and be ready when he’s called upon.”

Great information:

“It is not just in terms of what he brings playing-wise, it is also the fact that he is Newcastle through and through.

“He was one of the first people I met through the door and someone who knows the club inside out – he gave me some great information on everything.
