Steve McClaren says that the lead up to the Chelsea match felt like World War Three.

The Newcastle Head Coach intimating that the reaction of fans and media had been out of proportion to what had gone on since the international break.

However, the home defeats to Watford and Sheffield Wednesday reserves were bad enough, but it was the performances that were even more concerning, with only one effort on target in the League Cup summing up just how bad things had been.

Steve McClaren:

“The last ten days (have been) frustrating, very frustrating because the performances before the international break, Arsenal here, the spirit was good.

“We have come back and the last 10 days it has been like World War Three, we expect that and that is the reaction you can get.”

Seen the evidence:

“I have seen evidence we can improve, I see them every day in training and they can play, they can, they have performances like this (v Chelsea) in them.

“If we had just won it would have been an absolute high, yet we have still shown something important, we had seen that already and then it goes, then it comes back – it needs to be consistent.”
