After watching the West Ham v Newcastle match, Steve Claridge says that it’s no surprise that Newcastle haven’t scored in over six hours of Premier league football.
Working as a Radio 5 Live summariser at Upton Park, Claridge says the players are totally failing to understand what Steve McClaren expects of them at this moment in time.
He also criticised McClaren’s team for failing to have any width, with all the play down the middle of the pitch.
However, Steve Claridge does think that the United Head Coach made one massive blunder, by leaving Ayoze Perez on the bench.
In a poll before the match we asked Newcastle fans if Ayoze Perez should play against the Hammers and 88% said he should, though obviously Steve McClaren wasn’t one of them…
Claridge says that Perez gave NUFC ‘a whole new dimension’ and the Spaniard’s composure on the ball and all-round general play, was on another level to his teammates.
Ayoze Perez only got the last half hour with Newcastle already two down, it will be an even bigger blunder by Steve McClaren is he doesn’t find a place for the Spanish striker against Watford on Saturday.
“You can see why Newcastle have not scored since the first game of the season.
“I don’t think the Newcastle players get what Steve McClaren is trying to do at the moment, their system was totally unbalanced.”
A whole new dimension:
“There was no width and it was all down the middle.
“But when Ayoze Perez came on it gave Newcastle a whole new dimension, I don’t know why he wasn’t on from the start.”
