Ruud Gullit says that Newcastle United were ‘wonderful’ when they took on Chelsea on late Saturday afternoon.

The former Newcastle and Chelsea manager said that the visitors would try to say it was because their form dipped (which Mourinho did), especially in the first half, but Gullit insists that ‘Newcastle did everything right’ on the day.

The Match of The Day pundit praised Newcastle for trying to go forward all through the game, although later on they did tire as Chelsea turned the screw.

Ruud Gullit picked out his fellow countryman Georginio Wijnaldum as having an excellent game and that the goals were suitable reward for the team’s efforts.

The one-time ballon d’or winner says that Newcastle’s display was a surprise to all but that the very least they deserved was a point.

Ruud Gullit speaking on Match of The Day:

“They (Newcastle) played some excellent football and of course Chelsea will say it is all because of them, but I think Newcastle did everything right, with confidence, and didn’t just try to defend.

“Good one-twos and they tried to go forward all the time.”

“Wijnaldum had an excellent game…it was a great game for them and finally they were rewarded.

“Everybody was surprised but they deserved it – wonderful football.”
