Newcastle 0 Sheffield Wednesday Reserves 1  Wednesday 23 September 7.45pm

Sheffield Wednesday: McGugan 76

So there we are, if we wondered just how bad potentially things can get, we’ve just seen a horrific glimmer of the near future – unless something dramatic happens.

Pre-match everybody worried how strong a team Steve McClaren would name, on the surface you coudn’t really complain too much.

Five Dutch full internationals for starters…

This was a new record for Newcastle United and indeed I believe for English football.

That of course can now be added to our longer running record as English football’s longest running non-achievers.

To make matters far far worse, Sheffield Wednesday played their reserve side, only Tony Lees also played on Saturday when they beat Fulham in the Championship.

As you see from the stats below (which are an honest reflection of the match), Newcastle forced their keeper into one save – I must have blinked and missed that one.

De Jong went close-ish with a couple of efforts in the final minutes but it was desperate stuff.

Only one shot on target and forcing two corners, at home to Wednesday’s reserve team….

Secretly for some, I think they would have almost been relieved when Lewis McGugan prevented extra time with the winner 14 minutes from time.

Tim Krul should have done better with the shot from outside the box and the defenders in front of him didn’t cover themselves in glory either.

The only positive thing I can say about this disgraceful display is that I’m just grateful they didn’t send their first team…

(Good luck to the visitors and the impressive following they brought to St James Park – at least they knew everybody was giving it everything for the fans and the shirt…)

Full match report to follow.
