Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong has been nominated for the first PFA awards of the season.

Their first player of the month list of nominations for League One includes the Geordie striker after six goals in his first eight games for loan club Coventry.

The first PFA player of the month awards for this season, presumably taking in all games so far, with there being no separate award for the part month of August.

Fans must vote today (Wednesday  – vote for Armstrong here) for the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month before the shortlists get cut from 12 to three.

Then tomorrow ( Thursday),  Sky Sports will announce the three remaining candidates for each division, with voting then staying open until Monday 5 October.

The winners of each award will be announced after this weekend’s set of fixtures.

The PFA’s ‘expert’ panel which have compiled the list of candidates include Ian Holloway, Peter Beagrie and…Paul Merson.

The list of 12 candidates for the Premier League prize reads like a who’s who of players who have caused Newcastle problems this season, amongst the dozen nominations are:

Andre Ayew (Swansea) Graziano Pelle (Southampton), Bafetimbi Gomis (Swansea), Odion Ighalo (Watford), Dimitri Payet (West Ham), Ashley Williams (Swansea)

Meanwhile, in the Championship, supposed long-term Newcastle target Charlie Austin looks a knocking bet after scoring seven goals already this season.
