John Carver says that Kevin Keegan created a monster at Newcastle United when he took the club from near disaster and relegation to the third tier, to finishing third in the Premier League within two seasons.
However, Carver says that he can’t see United ever experiencing such highs again, even though according to him, the supporters still believe it is possible.
Apart from two or three seasons under Sir Bobby Robson, his former assistant says that those running the club haven’t been able to successfully feed that monster again.
John Carver was a junior coach at the time of Kevin Keegan’s entertainers era and near miss for the title and describes it as ‘so enjoyable to watch’.
For those of us who also lived through those exciting times, difficult to believe that it is almost 24 years since Kevin Keegan first managed Newcastle United.
When the curtain was pulled back to reveal Keegan, the looks on the faces of the waiting press was priceless.
A bit of a difference to Steve McClaren’s recent unveiling as the latest Newcastle boss, only one newspaper (preferred media partner) invited to speak to him.
John Carver speaking on the Richard Keys and Andy Gray show on beIN Sports, where Kevin Keegan was also appearing as a guest:
“Kevin Keegan created a monster and that monster needed to be fed.
“Unfortunately, since Kevin and Sir Bobby were there, we have not been able to feed it.”
We’ll never get it back:
“He created something – I was a young coach at the club at the time and it was so enjoyable to watch.
“The fans think we can get back to that but I don’t think we ever will.”
