It’s not like it said in the brochure

To coin a famous quote from Kevin Keegan; ‘It’s not like it said in the brochure’.

That’s right folks, Newcastle United are back in a pickle. Quite simply, it mings.

Whatever it was supposed be like post-Carver, with £50m spent on new players, and McClaren at the helm, it sure as hell wasn’t this.

The Chelsea game was a much needed morale booster, I can’t deny that, even if we should have held on for a win. We got a much improved performance, which offers some hope, but we remain in the bottom three.

Before Mourinho’s men came calling, it had the feel of another in a long list of crises to befall the club.

Ashley’s stewardship has been punctuated by implosions. We seem to specialise in the shambolic and the pre-Chelsea farces (Watford, Sheff Wed games etc) top the lot. Positivity and confidence seemed to have ebbed away.

Others have rightly pointed the finger at Graham Carr, our so-called super scout, for bringing in a clutch of players simply not up to life in the Premier League. I’ve long been sceptical of the influence he exerts.

But the main architect of this calamity is Lee Charnley, the MD.

The summer spending spree, with the value of hindsight, smacked of a clumsy bloke going food shopping for the wife without asking what brands she wanted.

He waltzed through the checkout without any careful thought about the areas he had to strengthen his team.

The time has come for the players to get the club out of this mess and find a way of winning.

It’s time for the manager to re-think his formation and look to play with more than one striker on the pitch. Perez has been under-used.

This must happen, otherwise the club will slip further towards the exit door.

We are already in a relegation battle. Just think, when we do make our way down to Wearside next month it could be a battle of the bottom two. Imagine how that is going to feel for a moment?

Yup, bloody awful.

A long hard road lies ahead. This was never in the brochure.
