After a distinct lack of fight on the pitch, trouble broke out after the final whistle at the Newcastle v Sheffield Wednesday match.

Rival fans clashed on Barrack Road outside St James Park, with Northumbria Police reporting that their officers brought the fighting to an end and ended up arresting three people.

All three, two men and one woman, were arrested on public order offences and taken into police custody.

Northumbria Police spokesman:

 “Officers arrested three people on suspicion of public order offences following the match at St James Park.

“At around 9.50pm fighting broke out among a group of opposing football supporters on Barrack Road, near to the stadium.

“Officers stopped the fighting and cleared the area.

“Two men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of public order offences and on Wednesday night were in police custody.”
