Dick Advocaat says that at least Sunderland only bought cheap rubbish players….
With Sunderland sharing the bottom of the table with Newcastle, Dick Advocaat was asked after their latest defeat whether it was any consolation that their neighbours were also struggling.
The Sunderland manager said that he didn’t want to talk about Newcastle but couldn’t resist adding that at least they hadn’t spent £50m on their star summer signings…
Advocaat was talking after the longest trip of the season and a 2-0 defeat at promoted Bournemouth, saying he felt sorry for their fans, though getting his dig in at Newcastle’s summer transfer activity.
It was reported that Dick Advocaat only agreed to come back to Sunderland because he’d been promised £50m to spend.
However, towards the end of the transfer window the Wearsiders manager was bemoaning that they hadn’t bought enough quality players.
In the event, Advocaat and his club ‘only’ wasted £32m (according to specialist website transfermarkt) which I’m sure will be a big consolation for Sunderland fans, who are the only club currently below United.
“For them (Sunderland fans), it’s a shame, we are all well paid and they give their last money to see that game.
“I feel very sorry for them, honestly. I really mean that, but I will do everything that is good for this club because it is a great club and great fans.
“I don’t want to say anything about Newcastle, but they spent £50million, which is a bit different to what we have done.”
